Seeds with high molybdenum concentration improved growth and nitrogen acquisition of rhizobium-inoculated and nitrogen-fertilized common bean plants Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Almeida,Fernanda Fátima Delgado; Araújo,Adelson Paulo; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues.
Seeds of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) with high molybdenum (Mo) concentration can supply Mo plant demands, but to date no studies have concomitantly evaluated the effects of Mo-enriched seeds on plants inoculated with rhizobia or treated with N fertilizer. This work evaluated the effects of seed Mo on growth and N acquisition of bean plants fertilized either by symbiotic N or mineral N, by measuring the activities of nitrogenase and nitrate reductase and the contribution of biological N2 fixation at different growth stages. Seeds enriched or not with Mo were sown with two N sources (inoculated with rhizobia or fertilized with N), in pots with 10 kg of soil. In experiment 1, an additional treatment consisted of Mo-enriched seeds with Mo applied to the...

Characterization of the early development of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from the Paraguay River Basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Andrade,Fernanda F.; Lima,Ariane F.; Assumpção,Lucileine; Makrakis,Sergio; Kasai,Rodrigo I. D.; Makrakis,Maristela C..
ABSTRACT This study described the initial development of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum, as well as changes in growth patterns. Morphometric and meristic variables were analyzed during embryonic, larval and juvenile periods, even as allometric growth coefficients for larvae and juveniles. Eggs showed an average diameter of 1.79 mm and broad perivitelline space (23.41%). The total length (TL) of the larvae ranged from 3.05 to 25.72 mm, and the total number of myomeres ranged from 45 to 50 (preanal = 13-16 and postanal = 30-35). Initial pigmentation is poor, concentrated at the extremities of the yolk sac. In the flexion stage, the pigmentation intensifies and forms a longitudinal stripe extending from the snout to the operculum and two longitudinal stripes on...

Development, structure and distribution of colleters in Mandevilla illustris and M. velutina (Apocynaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
APPEZZATO-DA-GLÓRIA,BEATRIZ; ESTELITA,MARIA EMÍLIA MARANHÃO.
Colleters of Mandevilla illustris and M. velutina are present on the cotyledons, shoot apices, mature leaves and on the nodal region, where they are interpetiolar and intrapetiolar. In M. velutina there are two colleters on the adaxial basal part of the leaf blade, and in M. illustris, this number varies. The differentiation of the colleters occurs in the early stages of leaf development. When colleters are mature, they consist of a long head on a short stalk. The central core of the colleter is made up of parenchymatous cells that may exhibit phenolic compounds and is surrounded by radially elongated epithelial cells. The foliar and intrapetiolar colleters can exhibit vascularization. The colleters produce a translucient sticky substance that reacts...

Leaf senescence of common bean plants as affected by soil phosphorus supply Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Araújo,Adelson Paulo; Kubota,Flavio Yuudi; Teixeira,Marcelo Grandi.
Responses of leaf senescence to P supply could constitute adaptive mechanisms for plant growth under P-limiting conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of soil P supply on leaf senescence of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Eight P levels, ranging from 5 to 640 mg kg-1 P, were applied to pots containing four bean plants of cultivar Carioca in 10 kg of an Oxic Haplustult soil. Attached leaves were counted weekly, abscised leaves were collected every other day, and seeds were harvested at maturity. The number of live leaves increased until 48 days after emergence (DAE) and decreased afterwards, irrespective of applied P levels. At lower applied P levels, the initial increase and the final decrease of leaf number was weak, whereas at...

Relationships between grain yield and accumulation of biomass, nitrogen and phosphorus in common bean cultivars Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Araújo,Adelson Paulo; Teixeira,Marcelo Grandi.
Shoot biomass is considered a relevant component for crop yield, but relationships between biological productivity and grain yield in legume crops are usually difficult to establish. Two field experiments were carried out to investigate the relationships between grain yield, biomass production and N and P accumulation at reproductive stages of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivars. Nine and 18 cultivars were grown on 16 m² plots in 1998 and 1999, respectively, with four replications. Crop biomass was sampled at four growth stages (flowering R6, pod setting R7, beginning of pod filling R8, and mid-pod filling R8.5), grain yield was measured at maturity, and N and P concentrations were determined in plant tissues. In both years, bean cultivars differed...

Barros-Cordeiro,Karine Brenda; Pujol-Luz,José Roberto; Name,Khesller Patricia Olazia; Nair Báo,Sônia.
ABSTRACT The intra-puparial development of the blowflies Cochliomyia macellaria (n = 310) and Lucilia cuprina (n = 470), was studied under controlled conditions in laboratory. The 3rd instar larvae were reared until they stopped feeding, and the pre-pupae were separated according to the size in larval length and degree of pigmentation and of the cuticle. We observe a set of five continuous events or phases: (1) pupariation, (2) larva-pupa apolysis, (3) cryptocephalic pupa, (4) phanerocephalic pupa and (5) pharate adult. The total time of the intra-puparial development, larva-pupa apolysis to pharate adult, lasted for 120 h (5 days) to C. macellaria and 210 h (8.75 days) to L. cuprina.

Historia de vida temprana de la corvina rubia (Micropogonias furnieri, Sciaenidae) en el Estuario del Río de La Plata OceanDocs
Braverman, M..
This study encompasses the bio-physical interactions of whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) early life stages living in La Plata estuary (Argentina-Uruguay, South America) to understand how they take advantage of the estuarine dynamics while traveling from spawning to nursery areas and undergoing ontogenetic and associated ecological changes. The analyses used include studies of spatio-temporal distribution length-dependent patterns; growth patterns looking for settlement marks in otoliths; and development related to metamorphosis and ontogenetic variations of the diet and trophic level. Samples and data come from vertically stratified samplings from 3 cruises (2005, 2006 and 2009). Distributional data also comes from an historic database. Results...

Symmorphosis in the proximal pathway for oxygen in the leaf-eared mouse Phyllotis darwini Biol. Res.
CANALS,MAURICIO; FIGUEROA,DANIELA; SABAT,PABLO.
In this report, we explore the matching of structures to functional needs by comparing previously reported data of maximal oxygen consumption and the development of the lung in the leaf-eared mouse Phyllotis darwini in warm and cold environments. We discuss whether the state of structural design is commensurate with functional needs from regulated morphogenesis as predicted by the hypothesis of symmorphosis. We found a close match between respiratory structures and functional needs during postnatal development, expressed as safety factors close to unity. However, in the adult stage the safety factors were greater than two, which suggests that adult animals acquired a structure greater than that required considering their maximum capacities. A high safety...

Ontogenetic changes in the fractal geometry of the bronchial tree in Rattus norvegicus Biol. Res.
CANALS,MAURICIO; OLIVARES,RICARDO; LABRA,FABIAN; NOVOA,FRANCISCO F.
Respiration and metabolism change dramatically over the course of the development of vertebrates. In mammals these changes may be ascribed to organogenesis and differentiation of structures involved in gas exchange and transport and the increase in size. Since young as well as mature individuals must be well-designed if the species is to survive, the physiological changes during the development should be matched with geometrical or structural adjustments of the respiratory system. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the fractal geometry of the bronchial tree during the postnatal development of the rat. The average fractal dimension of the bronchial tree of the rats was 1.587, but that of juveniles was larger than that of the adults. We found...

Physiological reorganization in the hypotrich ciliate Apoamphisiella vernalis (Protista, Ciliophora, Hypotricha) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Castro,Larissa A. M. de; Silva-Neto,Inácio D. da; Paiva,Thiago da S..
ABSTRACT Physiological reorganization is described for the first time for the hypotrich ciliate genus Apoamphisiella Foissner, 1997, based on a population of A. vernalis (Stokes, 1887) Berger, 2006 collected from an eutrophic pond in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Stomatogenesis is epiapokinetal, and the cirral pattern reorganizes from six typical fronto-ventral-transverse primordia, plus at least one short primordium located between IV and V. Primordia I and II originate from disaggregating undulating membranes and buccal cirrus, respectively; primordium III originates from left frontoventral cirrus plus a streak of basal bodies extending from the anterior end of oral primordium; primordium IV and the short extra primordia are formed from basal bodies...

Salivary cortisol as a tool for physiological studies and diagnostic strategies BJMBR
Castro,M.; Elias,P.C.L.; Martinelli Jr.,C.E.; Antonini,S.R.R.; Santiago,L.; Moreira,A.C..
Salivary cortisol is an index of plasma free cortisol and is obtained by a noninvasive procedure. We have been using salivary cortisol as a tool for physiological and diagnostic studies, among them the emergence of circadian rhythm in preterm and term infants. The salivary cortisol circadian rhythm in term and premature infants was established between 8 and 12 postnatal weeks. In the preterm infants the emergence of circadian rhythm was parallel to the onset of sleep rhythm. We also studied the use of salivary cortisol for screening for Cushing's syndrome (CS) in control and obese outpatients based on circadian rhythm and the overnight 1 mg dexamethasone (DEX) suppression test. Salivary cortisol was suppressed to less than 100 ng/dl after 1 mg DEX in...

Trophic strategy of Atlantirivulus riograndensis (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae), a non-annual rivulid threatened by extinction, in a perennial environment, Brazil) Neotropical Ichthyology
Cavalheiro,Laísa Wociechoski; Fialho,Clarice Bernhardt.
ABSTRACT Rivulidae includes non-annual fish of perennial habitats and annual fish of temporary wetlands. The objective of this research was to investigate the trophic strategy of Atlantirivulus riograndensis in a perennial environment. Sampling occurred in an environmental conservation unit in the Pampa biome, Brazil. Quantification of the diet followed the volumetric method. Consumption of autochthonous material as the main food source of the species followed the pattern of Rivulidae. Species is zooplanktonic when young. Food spectrum is broadened and insectivorousness increases with ontogeny, revealing a specialist trend in the feeding strategy of A. riograndensis. The most diverse feeding occurs in the spring and summer seasons in which the presence of...

Ontogeny and structure of the pericarp and the seed coat of Miconia albicans (Sw.) Triana (Melastomataceae) from " cerrado" , Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Cortez,Priscila Andressa; Carmello-Guerreiro,Sandra Maria.
Miconia albicans fruit and seed coat ontogeny were described under light microscope. The samples were fixed in formalin-aceto-alcohol (FAA), neutral-buffered formaldehyde solution (NBF) and formalin-ferrous sulphate (FFS) solutions, embedded in plastic resin, sectioned at 10 µm and stained with Toluidine Blue. Specific dyes and/or reagents were used for the microchemical tests. The ovary is semi-inferior and the indehiscent, fleshy globose berries are originated mainly from the development of the inferior portion of the ovary. The immature pericarp is mainly parenchymatous with some sclereids, druse crystal and phenolic-like compounds idioblasts widespread in the mesocarp. In the mature pericarp, the endocarp cells are often collapsed, the mesocarp is...

Estudo comparado do desenvolvimento de dois morfotipos larvais de Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) (Diptera, Calliphoridae) Zoologia
Cunha-e-Silva,Sandra L.; Milward-de-Azevedo,Eliane M.V..
The possible dissimilitudes relating to the duration of the egg incubation period and larval stage of Cochliomyia macellaria (Fab., 1775) from offsprings of females from larvae with and without pigmentation on Malpighi tubules, morphotype 1 and 2, respectively, was questioned. The experiment was conducted in climatized chamber regulated at 30ºC, 65±10% RH and 14 hour photophase. No significant difference was observed on average duration of first and second larval instars berween the two morphotypes, taking into account not only the conventional interpretation for the reading of different development phases of the larval stages (morphotype 1:11.0 and 11.9 hours and morphotype 2:11.7 and 12.7 hours for first and second instars, respectively), but also the...

Trophic ecology of large gadiforms in the food web of a continental shelf ecosystem ArchiMer
Day, Louise; Kopp, Dorothee; Robert, Marianne; Le Bris, Hervé.
Human activities affect continental shelves, especially due to the harvest of living marine resources. Understanding their functioning and dynamics has become a growing concern in recent decades, especially through use of trophic modelling approaches. Studying the feeding ecology of key component species also improves this understanding by providing accurate information on trophic processes, particularly the dependence on trophic pathways. This study focuses on the trophic ecology of four large gadiforms (cod, haddock, whiting and hake) found on the continental shelf of the Celtic Sea. The study combines information on recently ingested prey (gut content analysis) and a more integrated indicator of food sources (stable isotope analysis). Two size classes...

A SUBADULT MAXILLA OF A TYRANNOSAURIDAE FROM THE TWO MEDICINE FORMATION, MONTANA, UNITED STATES Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
DELCOURT,RAFAEL.
ABSTRACT Daspletosaurus is a Campanian genus of Tyrannosauridae from North America. This genus occupied the same geographic area of Albertosaurus, but remains of Albertosaurus are more abundant than Daspletosaurus. Here is described a subadult maxilla (AMNH FARB 5477) of Daspletosaurus sp. from Montana (USA) and possibly from the Two Medicine Formation. The description is based on Carr (1999) that described cranial ontogenetic variations in tyrannosaurids. The maxilla belongs to the ontogenetic Stage 3 sensu Carr (1999), in which the maxilla is thick, the lateral surface of the bone well sculptured, and the maxillary fenestra is subcircular and well separated from the anterior edge of antorbital fossa. Possibly there were more than one species of...
